(in Greek : Αρμένοι), is characterized by several ancient Roman, Byzantine and Venetian monuments and composed of small traditional settlements, rivers, three small gorges, caves and land under crop. Within a distance of 12 km from Chania you will find the archaeological area of ancient Aptera, which is really impressive because of the well-preserved remains of the old buildings, such as the churches, the big vaulted tombs and the theatre. The area is dominated by the monastery dependency of Patmos and the Turkish castles "Koules" and "Itzedin". At the Venetian village Sourpo (nowadays Zourbos), you may visit the remains of the Christ Monastery at Agavanes and a vaulted watermill. The population raches the 3500 inhabitants with most of them to be busy with the tourism, the trade, the agriculture and the fishery.
