Apokoronas (Αποκόρωνας in Greek) is a province of north-west Crete, Greece, in Chania Prefecture, between Chania and Rethimno towns.
It extends from the "root" of Lefka Ori (white mountains) north to the coast, in a wide plain with rolling hills until Souda Bay. To the east, Cape Drapanon rises above the plain and extends out into the Cretan Sea until Almiros Bay in Giorgioupolis and Kavros resorts.
The area is very green and fertile covered with wild and cultivated nature. The rivers Kiliaris, Boutakas, Kalivianos, Almiros, Mouselas and Vrisianos run through the region.
The name 'Apokoronas' suposed that came from the ancient city of Ippokoronion. This city may have been located near ourdays village Nippos, or on the site of the Venetian fortress, Castel Apicorono, on an outcrop between Kalives and Almirida.
During the Othoman and Nazi occupations, the brave inhabitants were resisted heroicaly against to conquerors until the absolut freedom. Apokoronas is also well known as the location of much of the filming of the movie Zorba the Greek.
Ourdays there are 12.500 inhabitants in 50 villages and setlements. The major towns of Apokoronas are Vamos, Kalives, Georgioupolis, Fres and Vrisses, with police, municipal and utility offices as well as tavernas, mini markets, schools and churches. Kalives, Almirida and Georgioupolis are large beach resorts.
Tourism, agriculture, small handicraft and fishing are the major local industries, with much construction and quarrying to satisfy the demands of many foreigners eager to buy or rent properties in the beautiful and traditional villages. Gavalohori, Plaka, Almirida, Kokkino Horio, Vamos, Megala Horafia, Tsivaras, Douliana, Mathes are among the more popular villages for foreign buyers, with a large amount of building taking place.
Many residents or workers in Chania also have homes in the area. In last 15 years many emigrads from the former "east block" have found filoxenia and jobs in the area most because of the olives harvest, the building construction and the tourist services.
The visitors can spend their holidays sightseeing on the mountains or the sea, while coming across to caves, lots of Byzantine churches, steep beaches and mountains with small villages beneath them.
