British travel writer and broadcaster Rory MacLean, author of best-selling 'Stalin's Nose' and 'Under the Dragon', has chosen Crete as the subject for his fifth book. In Apokoronas Rory and his wife Katrin have built from scratch a light, white, wood-and-fabric flying machine based on a 1907 design. Through the airplane Rory takes wing through the island, its myths, its stories and finds a warm people eager to help with even the maddest scheme. Listen out for 'Building Icarus' on BBC Radio 4 in spring 2002, and the publication of the book in 2003.
