Georgioupolis

Georgioupolis has been small fishermen's village in former times and by the time has turned to a resort place without loosing the village's characteristics. First tourists are mentioned on 70's even first travelers arrived on sixties. (more in the book "Winds of Crete") The small port with fish-boats, the square, the small church in the sea, the nearly 10 km long beach make Georgioupolis an attractive place for holidays on our days.
The strollers can find here lots of beautiful routes, such as the one which leads to the unique sweet water lake of Kournas, another one leading to Exopolis and Likotinara and many others as well.
In Georgioupolis can be found Mini- Markets, Cafes, Restaurants and several other shops.
Frequent transportation by public buses serves your locomotion to the towns of Chania and Rethimno, as well as to some neighboring villages.

The beautiful countryside surrounding the village is ideal for those been on walking, while the splendid sandy shore and relaxed seaside atmosphaire make it ideal beach lovers. There is an excellent bus service in all directions and this is possible to go quite far afield. Closer to home, there are many interesting visits to be made; to the old quarters of Chanea and Rethimno also to Lake kournas, haven for wild life, is within walking or cycling distance from Georgioupolis. In the bustling village square, high eucalyptus trees provide shade for numerous taverns and cafes. In little side streets off the square you will find a number of small shops selling jewellery, local pottery, suvenirs, clothes and local products as wines, oil e.t.c..

Down by the river the fishermen with their boats and nets add a tangy whiff of the sea to the village atmosphere. "Amiros" river flows into the sea providing a variety of wildlife habitats including nesting sites for the endangered loggerhead sea turtles. There is a long, sandy beach and a smal fresh water beach at Georgioupoli with a small, picturesque church Agios Nikolaos at the far end of a causeway that jutts into the sea.

Plenty of tavernas in the village square and quieter establishments on the side roads, with a couple of bars, hotels hosting Greek music evenings.

Late evenings you can enjoy the night atmosphaire around the main square drinking a Coctail or Bier or feeling the fresh air at the seaside bars, listening modern or classic rythms.

Cretan traditional fiestas are taking place on summer months in neihgbor villages such as Georgioupolis - prophet Elias (20/July), Kournas - St Johanes (29/Aug), Kalamitsi - Ag. Triada (../....), Exopolis - Panagia (15/Aug), Vrises - Metamorphoses - (6/Aug).
